Genetically Modification of crops is an untested technology, which, in the worst case, can be inconceivably calamitous. Alllowing it into our food chain would be signing up for being a lab rat. Let’s unite in shutting the door on GM crops.

Introduction

  • Bt-Brinjal is the first and the only GM (Genetically Modified) ‘food’ crop for direct Human Consumption in the World, was approved in India.
  • No GM food for direct consumption Is available in any supermarket in the EU.
  • As a food consumer, there’s no way you can differentiate between normal food and genetically modified food.
  • GM foods that are under question are made by crossing the animal genes with the plant genes (unlike hybrid seeds, that are made by crossing genes of two plant varieties).

Here are at least 10 reasons to say no to Bt-Brinjal – ACT NOW!

Recently, Expert committee, who approved the Bt-Brinjal, has been under controversy that it’s been rigged. The chairman of this very committee, concedes in public, that necessary tests were not done. And without them, at this stage, we simply do not know whether Bt Brinjal is safe or not. He also called the supreme court appointee Dr. Pushpa Bhargava, and explained him about the pressure he was put through by politicians and industries.

Once it’s given, there are 50 other crops awaiting approval in the queue. Mind that, they too are the first time to be tested on Indians!

  1. Infant (read dangerous) technology is foisted on developing countries by the western researchers for 1) recovering the research costs, human dangers be damned 2) to by pass the stringent western standards for such doubtful products for human health or consumption or 3) even produce data from the III world countries as a pilot experiment for eventual introduction into the west. Our pliable, corrupt scientists and politicians are slobbering for the few dollars these companies throw at them to get this sanction.
What shocks me as a microbiologist, is that Bacillus thuringiensis a cousin of the infamous human pathogen Bacillus anthracis- anthrax bug- is made out to be harmless.
We need to remember that it is a virulent pathogen for insects, and we just do not know how pathogenic this bacterium is when introduced into the food we eat. May be we should run a pilot experiment on the west by feeding humans with insects dead from B thuringiensis infection.
